MUG

Who doesn't love a handmade pottery mug to use for their morning coffee or tea ritual wake up call? For lots of folks their morning coffee or tea time is a quiet, introspective start to their day. As an artist it’s gratifying to know that a work of mine can be an integral part of that very personal self-centering time. The mug is something that I know people will use on a regular, even daily basis and therefore a creation of mine that they’ll develop a greater understanding of through that tactile interaction.

My customers often tell me they love using these mugs, love the handle, how it functions, how it looks and feels in their hand. It is important to me that the handles appear to flow from the pot rather than be merely stuck on the side. Doing handles in this way is a long process that often requires more time to accomplish than it does to make the mug body itself. But for me the aesthetic is worth the extra time and detail. The groove that runs down the center of the handle is made by my thumb when pulling out the handle. Patrons of my pottery often say they appreciate that through that handle resting place for their thumb they can feel the hand of the artist maker while using the mug.
