MARK’S STORY

Mark Slick was born in Tucson, Arizona and raised near Milwaukee in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. Growing up, Mark’s early artistic pursuits revolved around music, oil and acrylic painted canvases and photography.

In 1976 Mark started his professional pottery career in Minnesota, just two weeks after receiving his BFA in Ceramics and Photography from Utah State University. He spent his first five years working on the potters wheel at a large production pottery in Minneapolis as a full-time potter. Four of those years he held the head potter position. In 1979 he began gathering equipment and building his own home studio in his two car garage. In 1981 he left the large pottery to work exclusively from his own pottery studio, which he named North Country Stoneware. Several years later he changed the name to Mark Slick Stoneware. By 1988 Mark had moved again and built a large studio on his property north of Minneapolis. He sold his artwork out of his Minnesota studio and at galleries and juried art festivals throughout much of the Midwest and Eastern United States. For a number of years his work was also sold by his parents who decided to hit the Art Fair circuit when his father retired. They traveled and sold Mark’s work throughout much of the Southeastern United States, under the name, Stoneware by Slick.

Mark’s work is owned by people across the U.S. and throughout the world. Through the years his work received well over one hundred awards of merit, serving as a testimonial to the value and artistic quality of Mark Slick Pottery.

The US POTTERY OLYMPICS

Mark even competed in the inaugural U.S. Pottery Olympics in 1992, where potters from around the country tested their skills against one another, competing in heats of five on stage, creating pots at the wheel. Mark placed 2nd overall and won two of the four competitive U.S. Pottery Olympics events. Mark says that competing along with his pottery peers and winning the ‘Aesthetic Division,’ judged on Form, Function and Mastery of the Craft, was one of his favorite honors received, during his career as a professional ceramic artist.

As a full-time studio potter Mark made wheel thrown pottery as his living for 24 years…then he took a nearly 20 year break from ceramics.

Mark moved from Minnesota to Sacramento, California in late 2018. In 2019 he learned that there was a small pottery guild close to his new neighborhood. He decided to venture out of retirement and become a member, to see if he could still throw after a near two decade absence. In regards to coming out of retirement and his new adventure with pottery making, Mark says:

“I was happy to find that the ability to throw a pot returned with what I assume is the same type of muscle memory that is accessed and allows you to get back on a bicycle and ride again even after years away from that activity.” “The Covid crisis, studio closure and a full hip replacement disrupted much of 2020/21 for me, but, the pottery guild has now fully reopened and I’m back behind the wheel, thoroughly enjoying working in clay, exploring and creating once again!”

TAKING IT FOR A SPIN

My first day, first little test drive, throwing pots, after nearly 20 years away from ceramics.

“It’s great to be back behind the wheel, working with clay, getting reacquainted like long departed friends. I’m excited for this new adventure to begin, to freely explore, to see where my creativity will lead me!”
